PCSing to Peterson Space Force Base or Schriever SFB? Pueblo is 42–53 miles south via I-25 — but $150,000–$180,000 cheaper than equivalent homes near the bases. Here's the honest commute data, BAH breakdown, and neighborhood guide for Space Force families considering the Pueblo option.

Peterson SFB & Schriever SFB Housing: Should You Live in Pueblo?

PCSing to Peterson Space Force Base or Schriever Space Force Base puts you in one of the most expensive housing markets in Colorado — Colorado Springs and its eastern suburbs.

Peterson sits on the east side of Colorado Springs near Powers Boulevard. Schriever (now Buckley Garrison Schriever) sits even further east, past Falcon. Both bases draw large Space Force and Air Force assignments, and both sit in a housing market where median home prices have climbed well past $450,000 for anything near the installations.

Then there's Pueblo.

Forty-two miles south via I-25. Median home prices around $250,000. No traffic signals between here and there. And thousands of military families in southern Colorado who run this commute every day to Fort Carson — a commute that also puts them within range of Peterson and Schriever.

Here's the full picture.

The Commute: Pueblo to Peterson and Schriever

Let's be direct: the commute from Pueblo to Peterson or Schriever is longer than the Fort Carson commute. That's the central trade-off. Here are the honest numbers.

Pueblo to Peterson Space Force Base

  • Distance: ~46 miles via I-25 North
  • Typical commute time (off-peak): 42–48 minutes
  • Peak hours: 50–60+ minutes (Peterson's east-side location means Colorado Springs surface streets at the end)
  • Route: I-25 North → Fountain Blvd / Bradley Road exit toward Peterson East Gate; or I-25 → Powers Blvd/E. Platte exit for main gate
Note: Peterson's location on the east side of Colorado Springs means you exit I-25 and navigate some local Colorado Springs driving — more variable than the Fort Carson commute, which is almost entirely rural I-25.

Pueblo to Schriever Space Force Base

  • Distance: ~54 miles via I-25 North + US-24 East
  • Typical commute time (off-peak): 50–58 minutes
  • Peak hours: 60–70+ minutes
  • Route: I-25 North → Exit 138 or 141 toward US-24 East → continue east toward Schriever main gate
Schriever is the longest Pueblo commute of the three installations — just under an hour off-peak. Some personnel stationed there do make this commute from Pueblo; others opt for the Falcon/Peyton area east of Colorado Springs for a shorter drive.

The BAH and Housing Math

Peterson and Schriever both fall under the Colorado Springs/Pueblo MHA for BAH calculations. This means Peterson and Schriever personnel receive the same BAH rates as Fort Carson.

2026 BAH Rates — Colorado Springs/Pueblo MHA

| Pay Grade | With Dependents | Without Dependents |
|-----------|----------------|-------------------|
| E-4 | $2,160/mo | $1,689/mo |
| E-5 | $2,358/mo | $1,860/mo |
| E-6 | $2,433/mo | $1,980/mo |
| E-7 | $2,487/mo | $2,166/mo |
| O-3 | $2,679/mo | $2,418/mo |
| O-4 | $2,862/mo | $2,547/mo |
| O-5 | $2,997/mo | $2,676/mo |

Near Peterson vs. Pueblo: The Price Gap

Homes in the areas near Peterson (Cimarron Hills, east Colorado Springs, Security-Widefield corridor) run $400,000–$520,000 for typical 3-bedroom family homes. Fountain runs ~$430,000 median (Redfin, March 2026).

Pueblo city median: ~$250,000. Pueblo West: ~$370,000–$420,000.

For an E-5 with dependents receiving $2,358/month BAH:

  • A $460,000 home near Peterson (VA loan, ~6.5%) → ~$2,909 P+I + taxes/insurance → monthly shortfall vs. BAH

  • A $260,000 home in Pueblo (VA loan, ~6.5%) → ~$1,643 P+I + taxes/insurance → covered by BAH with room to spare

The gap is real and significant. Space Force personnel choosing Pueblo over Colorado Springs-area housing can often own more home while keeping their BAH working for them rather than against them.

The Rental Market Reality

Search housing listings for Peterson SFB and you'll find Pueblo West (81007) homes actively listed in the military rental databases. Real data: as of early 2026, 3-bed/2.5-bath homes in Pueblo West (81007) were listed for rent at around $2,195–$2,600/month — within BAH range for most enlisted and officer grades.

This matters because: if you're not ready to buy, Pueblo gives you the option to rent affordably while you get to know the area. And if you do buy and get early PCS orders, a Pueblo home can cash-flow as a rental more readily than a $460,000 Colorado Springs home.

Best Pueblo Neighborhoods for Peterson/Schriever Commuters

North Pueblo (Best I-25 Access)

For any I-25 northbound commute, North Pueblo addresses minimize your Pueblo-side driving before you hit the interstate. Neighborhoods in the 81008 ZIP code (Belmont, Hyde Park, Northside) and the Walking Stick / Red Hawk Ranch area in north Pueblo put you on I-25 North fastest.

  • North Pueblo to Peterson Gate: ~42–48 min off-peak
  • Price range: $280,000–$550,000+
  • Schools: Pueblo City Schools D60

Pueblo West (Space, SD 70 Schools)

Pueblo West sits west of I-25, which means a few extra minutes reaching the northbound on-ramp — but it offers the best value per square foot in the Pueblo market and SD 70 schools.

  • Pueblo West to Peterson Gate: ~48–56 min off-peak
  • Price range: $340,000–$600,000+
  • Schools: Pueblo County SD 70
  • Lot sizes: Typically 1/4 acre to 1+ acre

Downtown/Central Pueblo (Value, Walkability)

For budget-focused buyers or those who want city character, central Pueblo offers the lowest prices and most walkability — but the longest Pueblo-side drive to I-25 North for the Peterson/Schriever commute.

  • Central Pueblo to Peterson Gate: ~50–58 min off-peak
  • Price range: $130,000–$300,000

Making the Call: When Pueblo Makes Sense for Peterson/Schriever Personnel

Pueblo works best when:

  • Your BAH doesn't cover Colorado Springs-area pricing without supplementing out of pocket

  • You want to maximize equity build on a lower purchase price

  • You're assigned for 3+ years and can absorb the longer daily commute

  • You value more home, more yard, or SD 70 schools over proximity to base

  • Your work schedule allows flexibility on commute timing (avoiding peak hour drive times)

Colorado Springs-area or Falcon/Peyton works better when:
  • You have frequent early/late duty hours where commute time critically impacts quality of life

  • You're at O-4+ with BAH that fully covers Colorado Springs pricing

  • You're specifically at Schriever and the ~55-minute Pueblo drive is too far

  • You want on-post housing access with minimal commute
