Bessemer is one of the oldest and most historically significant neighborhoods in Pueblo, built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to house the waves of immigrant workers who came to toil at the Colorado Fuel and Iron (CF&I) steel mill — now operated as EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel. Italian, Slovenian, Croatian, Mexican, and Eastern European families settled here in tight rows of brick homes and wood-frame cottages, creating a working-class community with deep roots that persists to this day.
